Disabled People Can Shine Like the Stars They Are
Adaptive theatre gives disabled people in Coimbra a safe, creative place to belong — helping reduce isolation while building friendships, self-esteem, and new skills. Every role is meaningful, and every participant shines.

The Coimbra Adaptive Theatre Association began when two friends — new to Portugal and bonded by a shared love of theatre — realized how powerful the stage can be in restoring confidence and connection. Through their own experiences with disability, they saw how isolation and stigma can dim a person’s sense of self-worth, and they wanted to create a safe place where disabled people could belong, grow, and shine.
Today, CATA makes both onstage and backstage roles accessible so that everyone has the chance to participate — because every role is meaningful, and every participant matters.
